I just finished reading Permanent Alcohol and Life Recovery and I couldn't put it down. I have been sober many years and have owned 5 treatment centers and have worked tirelessly in the field for almost 20 years. We were knee deep in the Opiate Crisis before it was called the Opiod Crisis. When Covid hit I watched the ratio of addicts to alcoholics completely flip. During the year of Covid the State of Addiction Treatmenst released the numbers of deaths directly related to alcohol and opiates at over 90,000. That's approximately 233 per day. A staggering number that prior to Covid had plateaued. That number has only increased and continues to rise.
We as treatment providers must be realistic and honestly face the facts that treatment as we've always done it is no longer effective. The 12 step programs are amazing and I'm personally grateful for my early years that gave me stability and a plan. However, if the numbers are rising then we have to honestly face the facts that there are other modalities that may be more successful.
I spoke with our local police department last year and they said that fentanyl is beginning to have behaviors that we associated with PCP and other drugs in the past. Tasers and tear gas are having zero effect on some people that are high on fentanyl. I've interviewed a number of treatment centers to see whether if anyone is having success and those that answered honestly said no. Two weeks seems to be as far as clients are getting.
In the face of this epidemic I believe that trailblazers such as David are the key. If trauma is the gateway drug then we must change the way we treat trauma. This book is a blueprint of the future. We have to be brave enough to do something different. I reached out to a David because of his work with microdosing. I've worked with Vets who's treatment with microdosing saved their lives. Permanent Alcohol and Life Recovery is a call to action. David's work is impeccable and do we not as professionals owe our clients treatment that works? Being brave enough to face being ridiculed and ostracized for stepping outside the box is a price I for one am willing to pay.
In late 2018 we were burned out by the Woosley Fire and we lost everything. Then came Covid. This last Thanksgiving my brother who was diagnosed with FTD, a rare type of dementia, killed his wife and dismembered her. In Thanksgiving Day I found them. My sweet brother committed the worst imaginable crime and I was left to deal with what I saw. The story went viral and I know 100% this trauma will need something bigger than the standby. It will be through the work of David and those brave enough and open minded enough to understand that we should always be evolving and changing with the times that I will find relief.
Again, I wish to thank David for this book and his work. It is a call to action. “We rise by lifting others”
