Toxic Positivity? This might seem like some of the strangest words coming from a super positive person, living with everyone else in a very challenging world.
Positivity that is toxic in nature?
I never thought that I’d be writing about this topic, speaking about this topic, sharing this topic on numerous podcasts, radio shows, and more all over the country, but it is happening.
There is a level of positivity that goes past being helpful and into toxicity. It’s the positivity that people use when they say “we’re sorry your child passed but they’re in a much better place now.“ Or, “just imagine whatever you put in your mind, and it must come to you in the physical world.“
Now, these are just a couple of examples of toxic positivity.
Or positivity, that has turned toxic.
When you say to a parent who recently lost their child, that you’re glad their child is in a better place, it doesn’t matter if that might be an accurate statement, it sounds so positive but to many parents, it’s not at all.
I go back to my friend Scarlett Lewis, who lost her son Jesse to the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, how many times she told me that well-meaning friends would make comments like that to her, but they did not soothe her soul at all.
The second example is one that’s been around forever, and I have to apologize here, I used to teach this nonsense from 1980 to 1996.
When someone says all you have to do is think about a material object that you want and you are attracting it into your life, that is the positivity that is so toxic it’s ridiculous!
Just yesterday on Instagram, one of the most famous teachers of these principles put this up for people to read: “ The minute you put a desire into the universe, it is coming to you instantly in physical form.“
What? What? What?
So we don’t have to do any work… We don’t have to show up to work… We don’t have to worry about our bills because we’re imagining checks coming in the mail and I guess they do… As a matter of fact, I’ve said this so many times, if it was true that you could use your positive thoughts to attract the most positive things in your life, there would be no need for this article, there be no need for counselors, therapist, doctors, nurses, for authors trying to help people learn how to change their lives!
Of course, there are 1 million other forms of positivity that can turn toxic, but I just wanted to write this to bring to your attention, that everything that is popular, everything that other people say or do may not be accurate, and may actually be holding us back in life.
When I think about the quote that you can attract anything physical that you want via your thoughts, I think how sad is it that people are actually going to sit back and wait for life to come to them, instead of going out after life.
I can tell you that none of the books I’ve written, wrote themselves. By me simply putting out into this magical universe some comment about wanting to have a number one best-selling book.
No, I had to actually create the outline, make the notes, and then take the time to actually write the entire book… This thing called the universe had nothing to do with the actual physical concept of writing a book.
Now if I could write a number one bestseller just by simply putting a positive message out into the world with my brain, would I do it? Hell yes!
I’m laughing as I write this, oh my Lord I would do it in a heartbeat… But I’ve never seen anyone else that has had this happen, after 42 years in the world of personal growth, there’s never been a client that’s come in and said this is how they got their new car, by a single thought. I never interviewed a celebrity or a rockstar or an actor or an actress that said that all they did was create a vision board, combined with their positive thoughts, and they never had to do any physical work to achieve their greatness.

Have you ever heard of a brain surgeon, that said “No, I didn’t have to go to college, I just put a positive thought out into the universe that I wanted to become a brain surgeon and I woke up the next day and I was one!“
Are you laughing with me yet?
Let’s relax, let’s not take these false concepts too seriously, let’s do the work necessary to create the life we want, and then let’s enjoy the fruits of our labor.
You don’t have to work 24 hours a day to be successful, but at some point you’re probably going to have to put in some work, to create some success, in your life.“
