Anxiety is rampant, and here is one of the most unique approaches to diminish anxiety you will ever read about!
After 42 years in this industry of personal growth, I have tried, been exposed to, and witnessed some incredible turnarounds when people are suffering from daily anxiety.
We have used with our clients everything from cognitive behavioral therapy, meditation, journaling, exercise, amino acid supplementation for brain chemistry, and even teach the art of contemplation in regards to diminishing daily anxiety.
But the most unique exercise that I’ve ever come up with on my own to help deal with anxiety actually came out of a conversation I had with a friend of mine around 2007.
We were walking on the beach together, and I was in a lot of pain, I was suffering greatly in my career, the real estate debacle had just happened, I lost three homes and was filled with anxiety.
How am I going to make it in this world? What do I need to do for my career to revive it… Everyone around me is drowning in debt and I can’t find a way out, and I’m supposed to be the expert!
As we were walking down the beach I finally turned out to the Gulf of Mexico and screamed “F*** you anxiety! Yes, I’m talking to you! F*** you anxiety. Get the hell out of my life right now and forever!“
And what happened next shocked me.
The largest wave of calm came over me. My friend looked at me and said “What did you just do? You were like a madman! And now all of a sudden you’re as cool as a cucumber… What the hell was that?“
I looked at her and started laughing so hard!
“I have no idea, there was this urge within to just get rageful at my own anxiety, to get pissed off at my own anxiety and tell her to get the hell out of here! So I turned to the Gulf of Mexico and started screaming, thank God no one else was around that could hear me, and then a wave of calmness hit.“
We continued to walk for another hour, talking about this experience I just had, and I was wondering as a counselor and a number one best-selling author and a minister… Could I actually use this with my clients?
Would they think I was insane?
Would they think it was too vulgar to do this?
Well, from this one experience on the beach, I have shared this with so many people who have found great relief when they say “f*** you anxiety get the hell out of here!“, With deep emotion!
In other words, the key is to access that deep rage that deep frustration that deep anger and throw it out into the world!
And directly at your anxiety!
You can grab a pillow if you’re afraid someone might hear you and scream into the pillow!
Just recently, and I’m talking days ago, I had given a woman who struggled deeply with anxiety for the last eight months, and was actually petrified that the anxiety would never go away.
Over the eight months, we found the origin of her anxiety, and we used so many tools to get her back into normalcy, so much so that she loves coming in for the sessions!
Every day she’s overly excited to tell me about the changes she’s making.
And then one day for some reason the anxiety started to come back, and she walked into the office and said “David, I’m really nervous right now… I feel it starting to creep back in even when I use all of our tools.”
And that was my sign. It was time to take the old exercise out of the closet, “F*** you anxiety!“, and see if she would be open to it.
When I explained the exercise that every time it came up she screamed “f*** you anxiety! Get the hell out of here anxiety! F*** you anxiety!“, She instantly felt better!
She was smiling, shaking her head saying “David how the hell does this work!“
And honestly… I’m not sure how or why it works.
But when it worked for me around 2006, I never let it go.
There are times in my life today that I still do the same thing, if I’m struggling with anxiety or some form of insecurity I scream at it to go away!
Now I also use 1000 other tools, and the client I just wrote about above still uses all the tools I taught her of cognitive-behavioral therapy, the Sedona method, journaling, exercise, and eating to keep her blood sugar levels normal… She still does all of these exercises but the one where she screams at her anxiety to go away has become her most favorite!
And this is not rare.
We have hundreds of people over the years that love this exercise and yes it’s a little vulgar, but if it gets the job done who cares?
