With the passing of an incredible life, NFL Hall of Fame running back Floyd Little has died.
“Over the past 40 years, I’ve had a chance to interview and interact with some of the biggest names in sports, entertainment, personal growth, and more.
And these people, 99% of them, regardless of whatever their reputation might be in the tabloids, were all amazing individuals.
But none of them can come close to the humility, grace, and love that Floyd Little carried with him throughout his life.
As a three-time all-American running back at Syracuse University, my alma mater, he set the stage as a new type of running back: powerful, strong, and also extremely elusive when he wanted to be.
He then went on to have an incredibly celebrated career as a running back in the national football league eventually being invited to be a member of the Hall of Fame.
Even though we both went to the same school, Floyd graduated several years ahead of me so I knew him from being a Syracuse University fan, but I never interacted with him until two years ago.
I was invited back to my alma mater Syracuse University, where I played two years as a walk-on on the basketball team, to speak to a group of students and administrators about my life path, my career success since leaving Syracuse University, and this lecture was put together by Floyd’s wife Deborah, and Floyd decided to attend at the same time.
So here I walk into the administration conference room, which is filled with several students and staff, and Deborah came up and immediately gave me this glorious hug, and then out of the corner of my eye, I see her husband Floyd walking towards me with the biggest, most gracious smile on his face you’ve ever seen!
Because he was such a star at Syracuse, and in the national football league, and he had gone back to help the football staff, it was no wonder that everyone wanted to come up and say hi to Floyd, but the most amazing thing is he kept deflecting people and telling them he couldn’t wait to hear me start speaking.
He was gracious as gracious could be!
And then when he spoke during my presentation, he was a champion once again, as he reiterated my points to the audience in other words giving me an incredible pat on the back because my work was now endorsed by the football great Floyd Little.
The next day we were invited to the chancellor’s box to watch Syracuse University play in a basketball game, and he and I, a friend of mine and my family all got a chance to sit together watching the game and getting to know each other even more.
Everything that came out of his mouth was love. Everything that came out of his mouth was a compliment whether it was to me or someone else, everything that came out of his mouth was pure joy… that was Floyd Little.
Later that same year I was invited back to Syracuse University to give the keynote address at the graduation ceremonies, and who is the first person to come up to me, right up to the stage after I was done speaking and tell me it was an incredible commencement lecture?
You guessed it, the one and only Floyd Little!
You can imagine the shock on my face when here I am just walking off the stage after giving my presentation, and one of the most well-known sports legends not only in Syracuse but around the country is running up to tell me I did a phenomenal job…… I will never forget him and his wife, I will never forget his graciousness, his humility, his strength.
Even those who do not know Floyd will miss him. He was that powerful of a man.“
